The Trail of Tears as painted by Robert Lindneux in 1942. More than 60,000 Native Americans were forced to leave their ancestral lands and travel to reservations thousands of miles away.
From the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian: "The Cherokee Nation removal has become known as The Trail of Tears. In 1838–1839 the Cherokee Nation endured a forced march to Indian Territory. A forced march is when one group of people forces others to go somewhere."
