A typical chuckwagon scene from the early 1900s. This one is located in Texas in 1900. The photo was taken by William Henry Jackson (April 4, 1843 – June 30, 1942) was an American painter, Civil War veteran, geological survey photographer, and explorer famous for his images of the American West. He was a great-great-nephew of Samuel Wilson, the progenitor of America's national symbol Uncle Sam.[1] He was the great grandfather of cartoonist Bill Griffith, creator of Zippy the Pinhead comics.
A chuckwagon is a type of field kitchen covered wagon historically used for the storage and transportation of food and cooking equipment on the prairies of the United States and Canada. Such wagons formed part of a wagon train of settlers or fed traveling workers such as cowboys or loggers.
