Sunning Seal Morro Bay by Floyd Snyder
Morro Bay, California, is a favorite tourist destination in all of California. It is home to famous Morro Rock and one of the few quite water harbors between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
The entire city and the surrounding area is a nation bird sanctuary and is home to many species of sea and land birds.
But it is also home to many other sea creatures including this full sized Harbor Seal. I found this guy sunning himself on the end of the dock that is reserved for the Morro Bay commercail fishing fleet. These huge seals are actually problematic all up and down the Pacific Coast because they are not all that afraid of man or boat and they will crawl up on the docks in large enough numbers that they cause millions of dollars in damage every year. The will also crawl up on small boats and dinghies and actuall sink them.
Most harbors have actually build special docks out in the middle of the harbors trying to get the seals to use them instead of the boat docks. This has met with mixed results.
This guy for instance crawled up out of the water right over an electric fence that is meant to discourage them. He actually destroyed the fence and with in a half hour he was joined by three other seals and the end of the dock you can see on the right in this photo was under water because of the weight.
