Description
Pony Express Map by William Henry Jackson
Pony Express route from St. Joseph, Missouri, to Sacramento, California. The map includes all of the stops in between.
The Pony Express was a mail service delivering messages, newspapers, and mail using relays of horse-mounted riders that operated from April 3, 1860, to October 26, 1861, between Missouri and California in the United States of America.
The much-glamorized Pony Express has been featured in dozens if not hundreds of western movies, novels and even songs. But the mail delivery system was short-lived and only operated for about 6 months when it was replaced by the railroad.
William Henry Jackson (April 4, 1843 – June 30, 1942) was an American painter, Civil War veteran, geological survey photographer, and explorer famous for his images of the American West. He was a great-great-nephew of Samuel Wilson, the progenitor of America's national symbol Uncle Sam. He was the great grandfather of cartoonist Bill Griffith, creator of Zippy the Pinhead comics.
