Description
Monterey Harbor in Monterey California. This is a shot of the pleasure boat dock taken just north of the entrance of Fishermen's Warf.
Monterey, California is of one of the most popular tourist destinations on all of California. At one time all of the cargo shipped into California had to go through Monterey so the proper taxes could be collected.
Just off the famous Fisherman's Wharf is what is called Customs House Plaza where the ships would stack their goods for inspection so the proper tax could be collected.
Later the capitol of California moved to Sacramento but that did not change the commercial importance of Monterey as it remained rich in commerce due to the fishing industry, primarily do to the the tuna and sardine industry that spawned huge processing and packaging plants and Cannery Row was created.
Monterey and the famed Fisherman's Wharf is still alive with business with several of the finest restaurants in Monterey, if not all of the country, are located on Fisherman's Wharf as well as the working fishing fleet that still survives, the pleasure boat harbor, whale watching and gift shops.
