Description
Lovern's Clam Bell by Floyd Snyder
Lovern's Clam Bell was said to have cast in Switzerland Many Years ago. It is made of cast iron and has an unusual "double clapper". Its early history and use are unknown, but in time it was taken to a ranch in the Carrizo Plains in eastern Sant Luis Obispo County. It was used there to signal ranch hands during emergencies and for dinner time.
Bill Lovern brought the bell to Oceano in 1954 and hung it over his "Clammers Headquarters" store on Pier Avenue at the beach. It rang to let clammers know when the tides were low enough for good clamming and to alert volunteers of the local beach Rescue Team to respond to emergencies on the beach. The bell could be heard for three miles.
The bell was donated to the Ocenao Depot Association by Bill Oovern's beloved wife Rubye on September 15, 2002
