Description
Buzzards on Moonstone Beach by Floyd Snyder
I was walking on Moonstone Beach in Cambria, California, very early in the morning and I came upon a flock of buzzards feeding on a dead seal that washed up on the beach. It was very early and not quite light out yet and I came from around a corner where I had gotten very close to them and they all took off at once.
There was probably three dozen of them and these are huge birds with huge wingspans. The sound they made when they all took off at once was like just stepped into a hurricane. It gave me quite a scare until I figured out what it was. I have to admit it was really wild experience.
I continued down the beach about a mile and then returned about an hour and it was much lighter. But there was a lot more people on the beach so there was only about half dozen birds feeding and they were very timid.
The log you see this magnificent creature sitting on was about 25 or 30 feet long and about 20 yards behind the seal. I sat on the beach and watched for a while and it was very interesting how every time someone got too close the would all fly from the seal to the log. When the did that the seagulls and small birds rushed in and took their turn at the feast. After watching the smaller birds for a while, the buzzards with fly back to the sea and chase the smaller birds off.
Later that afternoon I was repeat my morning walk and the whole scenario played out again. That went on for the entire 10 days I was there. One dead seal was supplying a whole lot of meals for a lot of wildlife.
It was a very interesting study in Mother Nature in the works.
