Description
Antique Boat Anchor Custom House Plaza Monterey California Abstract
Antique Boat Anchor Custom House Plaza Monterey California by Barbara Snyder Monterey Bay, California was the fist capital of California and the port was one of the busiest harbors on the entire West Coast.
All goods were unloaded from the merchant ships and stacked at Custom House Plaza where they were accessed and the proper tax was levied and paid.
The plaza, or at least a good part of it still exists today. It is just off the famous Fishermans' Wharf that is still active but not so much for importing goods but there is stall an active commercial fishing fleet there. But today it is probably best known for the dozens of great seafood restaurants and gift shops.
There is also a museum that is free to the public the has what might have been a typical stack of imported goods that would have been found at Customs House Plaza back in the day.
