Description
Pinto In The Pasture Portrait by Barbara Snyder
Back in the days when gold was discovered in Kern County and Whiskey Flats (now Kernville) was booming, cattle ranchers from Texas moved entire herds of cattle to the area to feed the boom town. Little did anyone know that the high quality ore was going to play out in short order and people would start leaving the area in droves.
However the ranchers having found rich pastures and cheap land had pretty much settled in and decided to stay for the long hall and drive their herds to market. Those ranches became the foundation for one of largest cattle ranching areas in all of California, an industry that is still thriving today.
And of course, where ever you find cattle, you will find horses.
